Independence police arrested a 34-year-old man about 12:10 this afternoon after a chase that lasted more than 30 minutes, much of it at slow speed as the suspect’s vehicle slowly lost its tires.
Kansas City police helped during the chase, which started near an Independence motel and initially included high speeds. The vehicle reportedly had been stolen.

As the chase wound along Truman Road and other area streets, police used stop sticks to puncture the vehicle’s tires one at a time at various intersections.
The driver finally gave up after the sport utility vehicle spun out on the Blue Ridge Cutoff ramp to eastbound Interstate 70. By then, three of the SUV’s tires had been shredded, and sparks could be seen coming off the wheel rims as the SUV slowly wobbled along.
The suspect gave up without a fight, stepping from the vehicle with his arms raised and following police instructions to get on the pavement, face down.
The Kansas City police helicopter and two television news helicopters recorded much of the chase.
