Armed man orders convenience store employee into bathroom during robbery

A man armed with a handgun robbed a Downtown Kansas City gas station overnight and escaped after ordering an employee into bathroom.

The assailant entered the Phillips 66 convenience store at West Sixth and Wyandotte streets about 11:50 p.m. Saturday. After pulling out a handgun, he demanded money from the store’s register, according to police.

The man then ordered the employee to the back of the store, where he tried to access the store’s safe. While at the back of the store, the robber demanded the employee go into a bathroom. The robber then fled out of the front of the store.

The man was described as being about 5 feet, 8 inches tall. He was in his 40s and had a reddish, overgrown goatee. He was wearing a black Carhartt jacket and rubber gloves.

Police released a photo taken from surveillance video as well as a short video clip of the robbery which shows the man at the counter.
