Dry conditions and gusty winds contributed to large grass fires in the metropolitan area Wednesday, while it was under a “red flag warning” from the National Weather Service for extreme fire danger.
The same conditions are forecast for today.
Several fires were reported, and large ones burned more than 70 acres in Cass County and nearly 100 acres in Kansas City, Kan.
The Cass County fire, reported about 3:30 p.m., forced the temporary closure of Missouri 7 south of Harrisonville, near the Harrisonville airport.
Another fire, reported at 3:13 p.m. in Wyandotte County, began near 57th Street and Interstate 70 and spread toward Muncie Drive. Assistant Kansas City, Kan., Fire Chief Craig Duke said crews were able to stop the fire about 100 feet from four or five homes in the rural, wooded area.
There were no reported injuries in either fire.
