A rash of at least five grass fires kept fire crews bustling throughout Johnson County on Sunday.
Firefighters from Olathe and Lenexa battled a large grass fire for several hours at 119th Street and Clare Road in western Johnson County, according to Johnson County fire dispatchers.
The fire was reported at 7:45 a.m. on property owned by the city of Olathe. Though large, the fire did not threaten any residences, a dispatcher said. Three engines and three brush rigs were sent to the blaze, and it was extinguished shortly before noon.
A second fire was reported at 11:37 a.m. at 163rd Drive and Woodstone Drive in Olathe. Fire crews from Olathe and Overland Park responded, and it was extinguished just after 1 p.m., dispatchers said.
Fire crews also were dispatched to two small fires in the afternoon. One was at the 87th Street ramp on Interstate 435 in Lenexa, dispatchers said, and another was behind a Taco John’s restaurant in the 18600 block of West 151st Street in Olathe.
About 5:30 p.m., crews fought a grass fire near Frisbie and Mize roads in Shawnee. It was under control by 7:30 p.m.
No buildings were damaged in the fires, dispatchers said. The causes remain under investigation.
