Charges allege shooting, stabbing in Kansas City domestic assault

Multiple felony charges were filed today against a 65-year-old man who was stopped by an armed neighbor after allegedly shooting and stabbing a woman Thursday in Kansas City.

Jackson County prosecutors charged Edward D. Valdepena of Independence with three counts of first-degree domestic assault and three counts of armed criminal action.

Just before 11 a.m. Thursday, prosecutors allege that Valdepena crashed a rental truck into the victim’s residence in the 9600 block of McGee Street, then entered the home and shot her and stabbed her.

A neighbor who heard the disturbance grabbed a gun and went around the rear of the victim’s house. The neighbor later told police that he heard the victim screaming and kicked in the back door. The bleeding woman ran outside while the neighbor held Valdepena at gunpoint until police arrived.

Valdepena said that the woman was his wife and he allegedly told police that he did tried to kill her, but his gun jammed and he then stabbed her, according to court documents.
