A group seeking to recall Kansas City Councilman Jermaine Reed has turned in 79 pages of signatures.
Marilyn Sanders, the acting city clerk, said Monday that the group needs 1,633 valid signatures of registered voters from the 3rd District.
Election officials estimated it needs 700 more valid signatures.
Sanders said that once the Kansas City election board certifies the signatures, within 10 days, the group will have additional time to try to collect a sufficient number.
The group primarily faults Reed’s representation of neighborhoods near the planned site of the new East Patrol police station and crime lab campus. Some people oppose the selected site near 27th and Prospect, while others say it is the best site.
Reed said Monday that people have a right to petition but that he has a “laser-like focus on serving the constituents of the 3rd District.”
