Overland Park man gets life sentence in rape of 13-year-old girl

An Overland Park man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2010 sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.

Kevin Howard Shives was a registered sex offender for a prior child sex conviction in Illinois when he assaulted the girl at his apartment in April 2010.

A Johnson County jury last year found Shives guilty of rape of a child younger than 14 and aggravated criminal sodomy. According to trial testimony, Shives was a family acquaintance who lured the girl to his apartment by telling her he had a web-cam she wanted to use.

Shives, 43, was sentenced Thursday by Johnson County District Judge Peter Ruddick to concurrent life sentences on the two charges. He will have to serve more than 51 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

According to the Illinois sex offender registry, he was convicted of two counts of indecent solicitation of a child in 2005. The victim in that case also was 13, according to the registry.
