Mayor’s son was close friend of homicide victim

Kendrick L. Williams

hit particularly close to home for Mayor Sly James of Kansas City.

The mayor’s son, Kyle James, was a close friend of the victim, and the two young men had been together shortly before the shooting early Sunday in a Westport area parking lot, the mayor said.

“He’s really upset,” Mayor James said of his son. “It’s his friend, who was killed for no reason.”

Williams, 22, and Kyle James shared a love of music and had been at a weekend music festival in Westport, where Kyle James had performed, his father said.

James said his son did not actually witness the shooting.

Witnesses told police that Williams and several others were walking to their cars about 1:45 a.m. Sunday in a parking lot at 4001 Mill St. when some other young men in a vehicle made a comment about a young woman who was with them.

When Williams said something to them, one man pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest.

The men fled the area in a burgundy SUV, police were told.

An ambulance rushed Williams to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The mayor said Williams had been at his home on several occasions and was always very polite and friendly.

“He seemed like a good kid to me,” the mayor said.

Police said they had no suspects in custody. They asked anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
