Explosion injures two, damages Prairie Village home

An explosion injured two residents of a Prairie Village home Sunday morning.

The injuries in both cases were minor, said Capt. Bob Wilcox, acting battalion chief for Consolidated Fire District 2.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, he said.

Emergency personnel responded to the call about 10:30 a.m. in the 4500 block of West 66th Terrace.

“There was quite a bit of damage, with bricks littered around the yard,” Wilcox said.

Ron Shaffer, mayor of Prairie Village, heard the blast while sitting with his wife on the porch of his home several blocks away.

“We knew it was an explosion,” Shaffer said.

Those responding to the blast believed the explosion may have occurred in a fireplace, said Shaffer, adding that a natural-gas problem was a possibility.

“There was a lot of damage. It blew out brick and took the chimney down,” Shaffer said.
