KC police investigate assault said to be racially motivated

Kansas City police are investigating what they are calling a possibly racially motivated assault that left a 50-year-old man with a fractured hip.

A police officer on patrol Thursday night found the victim lying on the ground at 67th Street and Prospect Avenue about 10:40 p.m. The man told the officer that he was walking home from the store when a group of about six young men approached him and asked for directions.

The man said he sensed that something was wrong and started to back away from the group. The youths then began punching and kicking him. The man fell to the ground and covered up while his attackers continued to kick and stomp him.

He told police that they used racially derogatory terms toward him during the assault. The victim, who is white, told police the assailants were black.

The victim said they did not take anything from him before they ran off.

Officers called to the area saw several youths nearby. They ran and no arrests were made.

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
