Urn and ashes now part of KCPD’s lost and found

Kansas City police are trying to return an urn found earlier this month along a Northland roadway to its owner.

On March 2, someone found the urn under a tree near 72nd Street and North Brighton Avenue and turned it over to the Shoal Creek Patrol Division.

“Nobody knows where the mystery urn is from,” said Detective Aaron Benson, with the division’s property crimes unit. “We are trying to figure our where it’s from and who it belongs to.”

The urn contains wrapped ashes. Detectives have asked the Jackson County Medical Examiner to determine if the ashes are human or animal remains, Benson said.

The urn was next to a tree and sign that had been knocked over. Police are not sure if the urn was left at that location on purpose.

“We want to get it to the right people or to the right place,” Benson said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Benson at 816-413-3425 or Shoal Creek Property Crimes at 816-413-3401.
