Man charged with trying to drown his two children

Prosecutors on Friday filed a charge of attempted first-degree murder against a 23-year-old man accused of trying to drown his children.

Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome A. Gorman also charged Lamonte J. Brown with child abuse, three counts of making a criminal threat and domestic battery.

Authorities said Brown’s 1- and 3-year-old children were held underwater in a bathtub about 8 p.m. Thursday. Police said they managed to stop Brown after they were called to the apartment in the 2000 block of South Mill Street.

Police said that upon arrival, they heard a woman screaming and found the man holding a child whom he allegedly tried to drown. Police said they think Brown previously tried to drown the other child.

The children did not suffer serious injury and are in the custody of their mothers, authorities said.

Brown is being held on a $1 million bond.
