Overland Park murder victim had protection order against husband who killed her

A woman who was killed by her husband Thursday had a protection order against him, Overland Park police said Friday.

Barry Beaver, 58, killed his estranged wife, Debra Beaver, 56, and then himself, police said.

Debra Beaver had recently filed for divorce and had an order of protection, court records show.

In applying for the order in November, she wrote: “He has threatened me, driven his vehicle into mine. He took a golf club and broke out the windshield of my car. I know he would hurt me and my property if given the opportunity.”

A judge had ordered them to attend mediation in the divorce, but about 10 a.m. Thursday he shot her while she was in her car in he 5800 block of West 145th Street, police said. She was soon pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police found her husband dead about 2:30 p.m. inside a truck near the scene of the shooting, they said.
