Kansas City man charged with murder tied to drug debt

Jackson County prosecutors today accused a 43-year-old man of fatally shooting another man last month over a drug debt.

Prosecutors charged Brian K. Savage, of Kansas City, with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the Nov. 21 killing of Shawn M. Williams, 28, of Kansas City.

Court records said Williams and a second man went to an apartment in the 3500 block of E. 51st Street about 11 p.m. to collect money from Savage for a drug debt. The men argued with Savage, who allegedly began to pull a gun. The second man punched Savage to try to prevent him from shooting them, according to the records, but Savage allegedly shot both men while they were in the hallway, and the victims ran out of the building.

Williams collapsed in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to his chest. The second victim went to a hospital with non life-threatening wounds.
