Police locate person of interest in Olathe homicide

Police found the person of interest in an Olathe homicide shortly after a missing 3-year-old boy who was last seen with the man was found in Kansas City.

Olathe police said this afternoon that they located Maurice O. Stewart, 22, the man last seen with the boy. Police declined to comment further about the case or Stewart and said the investigation was continuing.

Police were called to the Re-Start homeless shelter at 918 E. Ninth St. about 10:25 a.m., where workers told police an unknown person recently dropped the boy off. The boy’s grandmother showed up at the shelter to take custody of him.

Police confirmed the boy was the missing child, Carlos Angel Villegas III, who was last seen with Stewart.

The homicide victim, 57-year-old Stephen L. Cook of California, was found just before 8 a.m. Tuesday at a motel in the 200 block of East Flaming Road in Olathe after a call came in about a medical emergency. Police identified the man Wednesday.

Investigators ruled his death a homicide but have not released how the man died.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Olathe police at 913-971-7455 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
