Fans heading to Kauffman for Kansas City Royals home opener will want to bundle up
The baseball season gets underway in Kansas City this week with the Royals’ home opener against the Cleveland Guardians, but it won’t feel like it.
“It looks like it’s going to be kind of a chilly and blustery day across the area,” said Chris Bowman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Kansas City.
Temperatures when the first pitch is thrown at 3:10 p.m. Thursday are forecast to be right around 50 degrees. Winds will be strong, probably around 20 mph, with some stronger gusts.
There’s also an outside shot of a passing shower, but it looks like the best chances for that will be up to the north and east of the Kansas City area, Bowman said.
“I would definitely have a jacket and a windbreaker,” he said. “It’s going to be below normal temperatures with kind of blustery northwest winds.”
Temperatures should remain relatively stable throughout the game, but if the game stretches late or goes into extra innings, conditions could drop into the upper 40s. Typically, temperatures are in the low 60s for this time of year in Kansas City.
For those doing anything in the morning Thursday, temperatures will be around 40 degrees. It will be dry though. Temperatures will gradually warm, but the wind will make it feel cooler.
“I would definitely bundle up because it’s going to be cooler than normal and that wind really just takes the heat out of you,” Bowman advised fans headed out to Kauffman Stadium. “It’s going to be a chilly one.”
