Kansas City police are investigating the death of a person whose body was found in the Missouri River near the Ameristar Casino Tuesday afternoon.

The body was spotted about 1:30 p.m. by people on a barge near the 7800 block of Northeast Birmingham Road, near the casino and a sand and gravel company, according to police.

Police on Tuesday afternoon were waiting for members of the Kansas City Fire Department to remove the body from the river.

Capt. Lionel Colón, a Kansas City police spokesman, said the Police Department is treating the death as a homicide unless the investigation shows otherwise.
