Drivers are facing major traffic delays headed into downtown Kansas City along westbound Interstate 70, and the lane closures will continue all week.
Rush hour traffic Monday morning was backing up beyond the Jackson Avenue curve. Traffic was slowing near Van Brunt Boulevard. Drivers were being urged to find alternative routes into downtown.
Bridge repairs have forced the Missouri Department of Transportation to close the two left lanes of westbound I-70 beginning at the Benton Boulevard curve to the westbound Interstate 670/I-70 split.
The lanes were closed Saturday and will remain closed through Friday. The right lane of westbound I-670 from the I-670/I-70 split to the 13th Street ramp is also closed.
Crews are making repairs to the westbound I-670 bridge over Troost.
The Transportation Department urged drivers to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones.
There have been fatal crashes in work zones this year in the Kansas City area, including a fiery crash July 17 along Interstate 435 in Overland Park where a massive repaving project is underway.
