Kansas City fire crews helped rescue 18 people Monday afternoon from an elevator at an underground commercial complex at 31st and Mercier streets, according to authorities.
Crews were working at the elevator at 3150 Mercier, near Southwest Boulevard, shortly before 4 p.m.
The elevator provides access to a complex of businesses located underground in the area.
Kansas City Fire Chief Paul Berardi posted a message on Twitter about 3:50 p.m. saying that 14 of 18 potential victims had been rescued and six ambulances were on the scene.

By 4:30 p.m., rescue crews were clearing the scene. Employees in the underground complex said all 18 people who were trapped had been rescued.
