Zocalo Mexican Cuisine & Tequileria in the Country Club Plaza reopened Tuesday after an ordeal with insects and the Kansas City Health Department that owner Chris Ridler called “the most incredibly trying time in my 12-year-career in the restaurant industry.”
The restaurant at 620 W. 48th St. had closed last weekend when a follow-up inspection by the Kansas City Health Department reported finding three baby cockroaches at different locations.
Zocalo has been dealing with violations since problems with roaches were found in a routine inspection June 15.
Ridler, in a letter to customers on Zocalo’s website, said the situation is “completely remedied.”

The problem stemmed from heavy rains earlier in June that flooded Brush Creek and backed up sewer lines, he said, which led to the problem with cockroaches.
During the past week, he said, restaurant staff tore out affected walls and renovated basement areas “to help ensure we don’t have this problem again.”
