A motorcyclist was killed in a fatal two-vehicle wreck Friday afternoon that shut down the eastbound lanes of U.S. 40 at Interstate 70 in Independence.

According to police, the wreck occurred about 4 p.m. when a 2016 Yamaha sport bike traveling westbound on U.S. 40 at a high rate of speed collided with a 2003 Jeep Liberty as it was making a left turn from the westbound I-70 exit ramp to eastbound U.S. 40.

The driver of the sport bike, a 37-year-old man, was killed on impact, police said. The driver of the Jeep Liberty was not injured.

Police urged motorists to avoid U.S. 40 between Sterling Road and I-70 for hours.

The motorcyclist was not identified Friday.

The crash remains under investigation.
