A train struck and killed a pedestrian early Wednesday morning near Missouri 291 in Independence, according to police.

Officers were called to the scene shortly before 4 a.m. and found a person killed on the train tracks under Missouri 291, north of East 39th Street South.

The person’s name has not yet been released, pending notification of the family, police said.

One southbound lane of Missouri 291 was closed during the morning rush hour while police and personnel from the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office investigated the death.
