Fire destroyed a house in Lee’s Summit on Monday afternoon, as fire crews battling the blaze were forced to take a defensive position outside while parts of the home collapsed.
The fire was reported shortly before 2 p.m. Monday at a split-level, ranch-style house in the 1300 block of Southwest Fifth Street, according to the Lee’s Summit Fire Department.
A homeowner reported hearing an explosion in the garage before fire spread into the house and an upper floor.
The occupants of the house were safely outside when fire crews arrived. As the fire burned, parts of the house collapsed and crews battled the blaze from outside. The fire was declared under control shortly after 3 p.m. No injuries were reported.
The house was severely damaged. Fire officials said the blaze began near a vehicle parked in the garage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
