A Kirksville, Mo., native was among three Green Berets killed Friday when they came under fire at a Jordanian military base. Staff Sgt. Matthew C. Lewellen, 27, was with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) based at Fort Campbell, Ky.
The other soldiers, Staff Sgt. Kevin J. McEnroe, 30, and Staff Sgt. James F. Moriarty, 27, were also based at Fort Campbell, the Army said in a news release.
Lewellen had more than six years of service in the Army. This was his second overseas tour. His numerous service awards include the Bronze Star Medal. He attended Truman State University and was enrolled at the University of Kansas when he enlisted, according to a statement from his family.
McEnroe, a native of Tucson, Arizona, had more than eight years of service in the Army. Moriarty, a native of Kerrville, Texas, had more than five years of service to the Army. This was his second overseas tour. Both soldiers had numerous service awards.
