Kansas City police on Monday were investigating a crash in which an SUV plunged from a bridge on U.S. 71, killing the driver.
The incident was reported about 11 a.m. in the 8100 block of Indiana Avenue. Workers at a nearby construction company discovered the mangled SUV when they went to retrieve some pipes the company had at a scrap yard on their property beneath U.S. 71, said Kansas City police Sgt. Bill Mahoney with the accident investigation unit. The driver was dead.
The vehicle was southbound on U.S. 71 when the driver lost control and jumped the jersey barrier and plunged into a pile of pipes. The drop is considerable and police think the driver died when he crashed or shortly after, Mahoney said. No one else was in the SUV.
Police think the crash occurred sometime well before the vehicle was discovered, police said.
