The Overland Park Fire Department is investigating an early morning house fire Saturday in the 165th block of Metcalf Avenue as an arson, according to authorities.

The house was declared a total loss Saturday after crews from Overland Park, Johnson County Fire District No. 2 and Leawood responded to the call shortly after 6 a.m.

Later on Saturday, fire department investigators announced that the fire appeared to be suspicious, in part because they initially found two fires in separate locations. Investigators said they had uncovered other details that pointed to arson, but did not release that information as the probe continued.

Shortly after the fire Saturday morning the department said in a statement that the volume of the fire forced crews outside after they first tried to extinguish the fire from the inside. Response teams worked the fire from the outside until they could return inside the structure.

No one was inside the house, and no injuries were reported.
