Dawn Ketcham paused for a moment as she tried to make sense of what had transpired in her Olathe neighborhood Saturday afternoon.
Hours after a 3-year-old girl was struck and killed by a car in the 15100 block of South Blackfoot Drive, Ketcham thought of her own 3-year-old twins.
Her family lives less than a block from where a car driving south on Blackfoot hit the toddler about 2 p.m. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the car’s driver, a 26-year-old man, remained at the scene. He was not cited, but police were continuing to investigate.

“I have 3-year-old twin daughters and to think this could have been them,” Ketcham said.
A man who lives nearby, and who didn’t want to be identified, said he heard screaming before he ran outside and saw the accident’s aftermath.
“All I want to say is God bless the family,” he said.
Olathe Police Sgt. Bryan Hill said the girl either walked or ran into the street and into the path of the car. Police had not released her name.
A preliminary investigation indicated speeding was not a factor, Hill said.
Authorities asked anyone with information to call the Olathe Police Department at 913-971-7500 or 913-971-6950.
