Kansas City area retired Teamsters will meet Thursday in another effort to head off large cuts to their pension checks set to hit next summer.

The Missouri-Kansas City Committee to Protect Our Pensions is holding the afternoon session to educate and mobilize beneficiaries of the Central States Pension Fund.

Funding shortfalls have led to scheduled cuts to existing retirees checks of 50 percent and more. The planned cuts have sparked local rallies and other sessions.

Thursday’s meeting includes an address by Jim Kabell, president of the Missouri-Kansas-Nebraska Conference of Teamsters.

The two-hour meeting begins at 1 p. m. at the American Legion Hall, 16701 East US 40 Highway, in Independence.

The crumbling Central States Pension Plan says it is going to cut members' pension checks, many by half or more. These Teamster retirees protested the planned cuts Wednesday in Kansas City. (Video by Mark Davis The Kansas City Star Nov. 19, 2015)
