Women in Design-Kansas City will hold a 10-year anniversary event, RISING Above, on June 25.
The celebration will include a presentation by Boston architect Sheila Kennedy on how architecture firms manage and practice design and a display on the history of local women in design.
The event will cost $25, and proceeds will go toward the $2,000 Women in Design scholarship. It is awarded to a woman in the Kansas City area studying a design field, including architecture and interior design.
The program is open to the public.
The purpose of organization is to encourage women to stick with — and advance in — architecture and design fields.
“But the event is not just for women,” said Amy Slattery, a founding member of the group. “Conversations about diversity need to get everyone involved.”
Women in Design began in April 2005 after 25 local architects discussed the history of women in architecture, mentorship opportunities and the lack of women architects in leadership positions. Today, more than 100 women involved with the organization continue that dialogue.
The RISING Above celebration will start at 5 p.m. at the (e)levate event space at 1516 Grand Blvd. For more information go to the organization’s website at www.widkc.org.
