Kansas regulators fine two telemarketers

Two companies have been fined for allegedly violating telemarketing laws in Kansas.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced the fines against Buzz Marketing and Communications LLC of Springfield, Mo., and WordSmart Corp. of San Diego.

Buzz Marketing was ordered to pay $952,000 in penalties and fees for calling customers on the national do not call list, the state said. The company allegedly called at least 93 Kansas consumers in an attempt to sell them vacation packages in Branson.

WordSmart agreed to a consent judgment and will pay $10,000 in penalties and fees. According to state regulators, the company was trying to sell software that would prepare students for standardized tests.
