Florida’s tourism organization has partnered with Google in the effort to map all 825 miles of Florida’s beaches. And for good reason: Tourism is Florida’s top industry, accounting for 91.4 million visitors last year and $71.8 billion in spending that employed more than 1 million in the state. Google has a similar project with mappers trekking the Grand Canyon. The Florida project is the first large-scale beach mapping project.Safety recall rule
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a rule that could provide far more security for used car shoppers and boost the effectiveness of safety recalls. The mandate will require automakers and motorcycle makers, starting next summer, to have a tool on their public websites that allows anyone to search for uncompleted recall repairs for any car or truck using its vehicle identification number.Priority mail upgrade
The U.S. Postal Service said it is improving its express shipping options to become more competitive with FedEx and United Parcel Service. The service, which competes and collaborates with the private sector for package delivery, will offer for free $50 of insurance for Priority Mail shipments and day-specific delivery, which will let customers know the day a shipment will arrive, postal officials said.Beefed-up audits
Auditors would have to tell investors more about the tough decisions they had to make in evaluating a company’s finances under a proposal from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. Auditors also would be required to evaluate whether assertions made in an annual report were accurate — a move that would take the auditors beyond their traditional role of verifying a company’s numbers.Fast-acting insulin
MannKind Corp. said its inhaled insulin Afrezza met the main goals behind two late-stage studies as the drug developer prepared for another push to get regulatory approval for its diabetes treatment. MannKind said preliminary results from the research showed that type 2 diabetes patients taking Afrezza and the widely used generic drug metformin saw better reductions in long-term blood sugar levels, called A1c levels, than those taking an oral medication.
