Regional stocks closed mostly lower Friday in a relatively quiet day heading into the Memorial Day weekend.
The biggest percentage losers included Great Plains Energy, down 1.5 percent; Inergy, off 1.3 percent; and Kansas City Southern, down .6 percent.
Regional bank giants Commerce and UMB Financial led the short list of winners Friday. Commerce gained .9 percent and UMB was up .4 percent.
The stock market ended the day with its first weekly loss in five weeks. Anxiety over the Federal Reserve's bond-buying program was the main culprit
The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 8.60 points, or 0.06 percent, to close at 15,303.10. The Dow was supported by a big gain in Procter Gamble.
The Standard Poor's 500 fell 0.91 points, or 0.06 percent, to close at 1,649.60.
The Nasdaq composite fell 0.27 points, or 0.01 percent, to close at 3,459.14.fell a fraction to 3,459.
The BATS 1000 fell 26.89 points, or 0.14 percent, to close at 18,532.85.
More stocks fell than rose on the New York Stock Exchange.
Trading was thin ahead of Memorial Day. Volume was just 2.7 billion shares.
Capitol Federal Financial fell 1 cents, or 0.08%, to close at $11.97.
Cerner Corp. fell 32 cents, or 0.33%, to close at $96.09.
Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 37 cents, or 0.86%, to close at $43.48.
Compass Minerals fell 24 cents, or 0.27%, to close at $88.12.
DST Systems Inc. fell 95 cents, or 1.37%, to close at $68.19.
Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 16 cents, or 0.76%, to close at $21.33.
Garmin Ltd. fell 23 cents, or 0.65%, to close at $35.12.
Great Plains Energy fell 35 cents, or 1.48%, to close at $23.23.
H Block Inc. rose 4 cents, or 0.14%, to close at $29.19.
Inergy L.P. fell 33 cents, or 1.34%, to close at $24.36.
Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 3 cents, or 0.08%, to close at $37.55.
Kansas City Southern fell 63 cents, or 0.56%, to close at $111.37.
Layne Christensen Co. fell 21 cents, or 0.98%, to close at $21.28.
