Kansas City police and state health officials are investigating a report of a sexual assault on a long-term care patient at Truman Medical Centers’ Lakewood Hospital in southeast Kansas City.
Truman Medical Centers spokeswoman Leslie Carto said a nurse at the facility walked into a room Friday night and “observed a medical care technician having inappropriate contact with the resident.”
Carto said the nurse followed facility safety protocols and the incident was reported to both the Kansas City Police Department and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
Carto said via email that Truman Medical Centers is “working closely with the authorities” of both agencies on the investigation.
“Truman Medical Centers’ number one priority is patient safety,” Carto said. “The organization has zero tolerance for any employee putting those in our care in harm’s way. We won’t rest until all investigations are complete, and the resident’s family has the answers it deserves about this incident.”
Carto later added that the medical technician involved in the incident had been fired.
“He is no longer employed by TMC and will not be permitted on the TMC Lakewood Campus,” Carto said.
