Construction officially began Monday on converting the former Seven Oaks Elementary School into a 44-unit senior housing facility.
The building, at 3711 Jackson Ave., was among a number of properties that the Kansas City School District closed in recent years to cut costs as enrollment declined. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday.

Seven Oaks Estates will be comprised of 28 two-bedroom units and 16 one-bedroom units. It is scheduled to open in May 2014.
The project qualified for Missouri low-income tax credits and funding through the city’s HOME program.
