Historic Horace Mann school reopens as apartments in Kansas City, Kan.

The $4 million redevelopment of the old Horace Mann elementary school in Kansas City, Kan., into market-rate apartments has been completed, and more than half of the units have been leased.

Foutch Bros., a Kansas City firm specializing in renovating old buildings, is the developer of the Horace Mann Lofts at 824 State Ave. The 30 lofts range in size from a 560-square-foot studio to a 1,100-square-foot two-bedroom, and monthly rents range from $750 to $1,300.

Steve Foutch, a co-founder of the firm, said 18 of 30 units already have been rented. The new residents include medical students, attorneys and police officers.

Renovation of the three-story former school, which opened in 1909, began a year ago. The lofts are served by Google Fiber, and many have patios.
