A plan to redevelop the old Sweeney Building near Union Station that could include 55 apartments is being pursued.
Developer Mike Rainen has a contract to buy the 10-story building at 215 W. Pershing Road. A preliminary plan calls for the upper five floors to be converted to 55 apartments.
The building, which once housed a trucking school, is 45 percent occupied. The main tenants include the Portfolio kitchen design store and the offices of the Associated Press.
The current commercial tenants would be encouraged to remain as part of the $18 million redevelopment proposal.
The developer plans to have the building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which would make the project eligible for historic tax credits.
