A free smartphone app and a loyalty program will promote retailers as open for business during construction of Kansas City’s streetcar line.

The Open for Business — KC Streetcar App is available for iPhones and devices that use Android operating software. It features shops, restaurants, bars, attractions and other retail businesses along the Main Street streetcar line that stretches from Union Station to the River Market.

“We are sympathetic with the local businesses who deal with the daily construction and traffic impacts, and we are committed to minimizing the impacts felt during the streetcar construction,” Meghan Jansen, spokeswoman for the KC Streetcar Constructors, said in an announcement of the effort. “Just as Main Street will remain open during construction, so will downtown businesses.”

Consumers who “check in” with participating shops along the route will earn points for monthly prizes and a $5,000 final prize awarded once the construction is complete.
