Kansas City’s Planet Sub expands to Texas

Kansas City’s Planet Sub is continuing to expand.

A new franchisee operation has opened a location in Austin, Texas, and plans to open another in October. Eventually it hopes to have at least eight Planet Sub shops in the Austin area.

Josh Klusman, formerly of Olathe, had worked for the chain for a decade. He has relocated to Austin to become the chief operating officer for the franchisee and also is a minority partner.

“I think we are a good fit. It’s an active city and we’re a fun concept,” Klusman said. “We are getting people who are from Kansas City and Lawrence who are just ecstatic that we are here.”

Planet Sub traces its roots to a Yello Sub shop that opened in Lawrence in 1979. Sean Kelly and Jeff Klusman (Josh’s second cousin) opened the first shop under the Planet Sub logo in 1998 in south Overland Park.

The company now has nearly 40 locations in seven states, including new shops in Atlanta and Oklahoma

City.

Planet Sub is known for hot sub sandwiches with bread that is made from scratch daily. The specialty sandwiches include the Mega Roast Beef, the Planet BBQ, the Veggie Grinder and the Buffalo Chicken. It also has soups and salads, and offers catering services.
