Three years after closing in Crown Center, Big Momma's Bakery-Cafe is making a comeback.
Sisters Jackie Buycks, Jill Kemp and Joyce Brown first opened the bakery in Raytown. After five years, Buycks and Brown relocated to Crown Center in 2009. They shut their doors in 2014 when Buycks went into the ministry full-time.
Now Brown plans to reopen the bakery by June at 4707 E. Bannister Road, formerly home to a Payless ShoeSource.
Big Momma's was named after Kemp's mother-in-law and some recipes have been in the family for generations. It has long been known for giant cinnamon rolls and house-made dinner rolls. It also will offer sandwiches including breakfast sandwiches, panini, house-made soup, cookies, cupcakes, cakes and more for carry-out and delivery in the metro area only.
"It's going to be great," Brown said. "I have three kids and in the next few years I will open two more bakeries in Kansas City to hand down to the kids. It's our legacy and I didn't want to let it go."
