When Eddie Bauer opened on the Country Club Plaza in late 1992, it set a new store opening sales record.

Now the store, currently at 436 Nichols Road, is scheduled to close May 2.

In a statement, Eddie Bauer officials said: "Because we have two other Eddie Bauer stores within a 50 mile radius of Kansas City, (Oak Park and Legends Outlets are only about a 30 minute drive), we have decided to consolidate our business in that market and close the Country Club Plaza location. The closing and opening of stores is part of our normal business practices; just as it is with other retailers. We’re continuing to update our stores in other markets and are always on the lookout for opportunities to expand our retail footprint."

Plaza officials declined to comment.

Eddie Bauer opened on the Plaza as a super-sized "premier" concept store, selling both clothing and home furnishings. But when the economy took a downturn, Eddie Bauer relocated and downsized to a 6,300-square-foot space, less than a block to the west at 436 Nichols Road, in mid-2011.

It featured a cozy lodge-inspired decor with big beams and a couple of canoes hanging from the ceiling.

In another note, in 1998, Eddie Bauer Inc. sued the Plaza's then-owner, J.C. Nichols Co., alleging the radius restriction in its Plaza lease "unreasonably" restrained trade and commerce. Eddie Bauer prevailed and opened stores in Independence Center and Oak Park Mall. It later closed the Independence Center store but opened a store in the Legends Outlets Kansas City in late 2014.

In a time lapse video, clouds begin to clear over the Country Club Plaza as the sun rises to begin a blue sky day on the last day of November. Most of the month was filled with days of unseasonably warm weather and very little precipitation.
