Less than a year after opening on 39th Street’s restaurant row, innovative Thai restaurant Aep has closed.

Jakob Polaco, chef and founder, posted this message on the restaurant’s Facebook page Saturday morning: “Unfortunately due to circumstances out of our control, Aep will be closing its doors after service tonight. We are very sorry for the terrible news, however, please join us for our last day in the 39th street neighborhood.”

Polaco confirmed the closing Sunday but he said he was unable to comment further at this time. He also declined to comment on the status of Mr. Boy, a Thai rolled ice cream shop, which was scheduled to open next door to Aep this fall. His landlord couldn’t be reached for comment.

Polaco has had a passion for Thai food since he was a teenager. He opened Aep (pronounced ape) in late 2016 at 1815 W. 39th St. and traveled to Asia several times this year for research to continually change up the menu, which focused on Thai street food.
