East Brookside brewery, BKS Artisan Ales, plans an early 2017 opening in a renovated building at 633 E. 63rd St.

In a statement, owners Brian and Mary Rooney said it will be a “part-time endeavor” and they will do small batches of barrel-aged, sour, hop-forward and farmhouse ales. At first, the tasting room will be open just one Saturday a month. It also will offer some bottled beers to go.

Brian Rooney has been a home brewer for seven years. The Rooneys are Brookside residents and BKS is an abbreviation for the neighborhood.

The East Brookside building also houses the new Golden & Pine retail shop, FarmDog Studios, Amina Marie Millinery, Debbie Barrett-Jones Textiles and Pure Pilates.

Canihaveabite organic to-go and beverage bar plans to open in early 2017.

Meanwhile, negotiations for a brewery in a freestanding building at 12510 Santa Fe Trail Drive in Lenexa have fallen through. It would have included an event space, outdoor deck and tasting room.

But the owners, who also are Lenexa residents, are looking for another space in the area.
