WICHITA — Police wounded a man thought to be involved in a bank robbery this morning and arrested two other robbery suspects.
Deputy Police Chief Tom Stolz said the suspect who was shot "is at the hospital in serious but stable condition."
"We think that these particular robbers have hit us before,'' Stolz said.
The events began at 10:39 a.m. when a robbery was reported at the Equity Bank branch just north of Central and Webb.
Police were looking for a vehicle in the area that had been stolen earlier and began following it west on 21st Street near Webb.
A short chase ended near the Woodgate apartments on 21st between Oliver and Woodlawn. Police said three suspects jumped out of the stolen car and fled in different directions.
Stolz said one officer fired when the suspect was "going into his waistband." He said police still do not know whether the man had a weapon. He said weapons were seen during the bank robbery.
"Due to the nature of the crime, I think the officer felt in jeopardy at the time,'' Stolz said.
A second suspect was arrested shortly afterward trying to break into an apartment at the complex.
The third suspect was found more than an hour later at the complex hiding in an apartment.
Police said they also arrested a fourth man this morning but are uncertain whether he was directly involved in the robbery.
Traffic on 21st Street between Oliver and Edgemoor was closed for much of the morning.
