How many rooms do you need to furnish? How much can you afford to spend on a sofa? What’s your favorite color? Ask ten different people and you’re likely to get as many different answers.

Once upon a time, our furniture shopping was limited by the number and quality of furniture stores in our communities. We didn’t have access to as broad a selection of furniture and furniture prices as we do now. Online shopping changed all that. Nowadays, you can find pretty much anything you’re looking for on the internet, whether it’s an orange leather sectional, a Mission-style dining table and chairs, or Disney Princess bunk beds, without leaving your home. And sometimes, you can find them at considerable cost savings versus buying them at a brick-and-mortar store.

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular shopping sites for furniture and home accessories and compare them for quality, cost, convenience and more.

Also, if you’re about to move into a new place, check out our comprehensive moving checklist, our guide to the best moving companies and our in-depth article on how much it costs to move.

Best Places to Buy Cheap Furniture

Ikea

Ikea is a Swedish retailer that was founded in 1943. The company has received endless accolades for its innovative selling proposition: low-cost furniture you assemble yourself. The company is now the largest furniture retailer in the world and operates online and through 52 stores in the US alone.

You can buy furniture for every room in your home from Ikea — and equip yourself for outdoor living as well. Ikea offers a huge selection, much of which caters to people who prefer a minimalist style. The company pioneered the concept of flat-packing, which is one way it keeps its costs so low. You can purchase contemporary furniture from Ikea for about half the cost of many other furniture brands. And you don’t even have to be very experienced at DIY projects. Ikea products are simple to assemble. The company is known for its easy-to-follow instructions.

Ikea offers a variety of online interior design tools to help you plan your dream kitchen or at-home office and a mobile app that allows you to visualize products in your own space — something brick-and-mortar stores were never able to do.

The company also offers a unique buy-back program. If you no longer need the Ikea furniture you purchased, the company will help you recycle it and give you credit for buying additional items from the store.

Wayfair

Founded in 2002 as a series of online niche stores, Wayfair has evolved into one of the internet’s home furnishings superstores. The company has embraced the notion of a one-stop-shop — it not only sells furniture, but also home improvement products, appliances, pet furnishings, and more. The company sells an astonishing 44 million products and partners with some 20,000 suppliers to offer its broad selection.

Wayfair consistently earns awards for customer service and its website runs like a charm. You can search for what you’re looking for by room, item, construction material, brand, color and even sustainability score.

Wayfair offers its own credit card, as well as financing programs in cooperation with other well-known banks and credit services. The company also offers a lease-to-own program, which is unusual in the online furniture industry.

Bob’s Discount Furniture

Bob’s Discount Furniture makes it easy to find what you’re looking for by offering a wide range of product search criteria. One of these is price, which speeds up the process of furniture shopping on a budget. You can also sort through products according to customer ratings and reviews. We like the fact that you can hear from real satisfied (and occasionally dissatisfied) customers when you shop the site. And speaking of reviews, Bob’s Discount Furniture earns a 4.1 out of 5-star rating from more than 8,000 customers who review the business on Trustpilot.

In addition to living room, dining room, bedroom, home office and kids’ room furniture, Bob’s offers a wide range of soft home furnishings, including area rugs, draperies and linens. Have bare walls? Bob’s has over 500 items you can use to dress them up, including mirrors, framed canvases and more.

Furniture shopping can be pricey. To help you cover the costs, Bob’s offers flexible financing. You can choose among 6-, 12-, 30-, or 60-month programs to help you budget for purchasing what you need to furnish and decorate your entire home. And if you’re looking for the cheapest prices, you can visit the Outlet section of Bob’s website for the most recently marked-down items. Items may include incomplete sets and dinged and dented items so get ready for an adventure.

Amazon

Amazon is the online retail powerhouse in thousands of product categories. The company has mastered the art of cheap, quick delivery, especially if you sign up for an Amazon Prime membership. Amazon Prime items ship for free, within just a few days of ordering in most cases.

Amazon sells many furniture brands at a wide variety of price points. We did a search for sofas and were rewarded with over 400 choices. From slim and tailored to overstuffed, vegan leather to cotton florals, and sectionals to sleep sofas, apparently, Amazon offers something for everyone in the sofa department. And other product categories follow suit.

To start your furniture search on Amazon, you can specify either a specific item (e.g. dining room table) or shop by room. You can then narrow your search according to a wide range of criteria, including price, brand, construction material and more. Furniture prices span a wide range on Amazon — you can spend more than $12,000 on a sectional, if you please.

As experienced Amazon shoppers, we can tell you that Amazon searches can be overly-broad. When we searched for sofas under $500, the items returned included lots of chairs, for example. So shopping for furniture on Amazon can be a little more time-consuming and frustrating than shopping elsewhere.

We highly recommend signing up for Amazon Prime membership if you plan on shopping for furniture at the site. Membership gives you access to free shipping and returns and will pretty much pay for itself with just one furniture purchase.

Target

You wouldn’t know it by dropping into your local Target store, but the company sells a lot of furniture! The company’s product selection covers every room in the house and includes mattresses, as well. Our standard search for a sofa turned up nearly 700 items — a broader selection than offered by Amazon.

Target is known for turning private-label products into powerful brands. It’s also known for its ability to turn on a dime when it comes to fashion trends. Offering design-forward products at affordable prices is one of the store’s superpowers. Some people just love the Target look and the company has profited mightily on that basis alone.

One of the great things about shopping for home furnishings at Target is that all orders over $35 ship for free. What’s more, if you purchase furniture using the Target RecCard credit card, you’ll receive 5% back on your purchase.

One thing to note: furniture from Target often requires some assembly. That’s one reason customers enjoy free furniture shipping and don’t pay a lot for the company’s products in the first place. But if you’re shopping on a budget and you’re handy with a screwdriver, furniture shopping at Target is worth exploring.

Urban Outfitters

If your tastes run towards minimalism, modernity or a little toward the wild side, take a look at Urban Outfitters’ furniture. Bright colors and patterns and graphic shapes — think orange bubble sofas and hot pink heart-shaped tables — dominate the company’s selection on the one side and stripped-down industrial-inspired items on the other. Overall, Urban Outfitters has a limited selection compared to many of the online furniture resources we’ve reviewed. But the company has attracted a subset of consumers in categories such as fashion, storage and home accessories since 1970. There’s definitely something about UO for the brand’s loyal followers.

Shopping on Urban Outfitters’ website is a little bit cumbersome. The company’s search mechanism isn’t as sophisticated as some furniture retailers’. You can sort by furniture type (e.g. beds or desks) and then sort the collection alphabetically or by price. You can also choose to see new items, best-selling items or top-rated items (though the company doesn’t publish actual reviews.) But you can’t sort by style or color, for example. We should add, though, that this is less of an issue than you might think since the store’s collection isn’t that broad to begin with.

What do customers think about Urban Outfitters? While they might love the company’s style, they’re less satisfied with its customer service. Consumers on Trustpilot give Urban Outfitters a poor rating of 1.3 out of 5 stars. Others, who review the company on the Better Business Bureau’s website, follow suit, with a 1-out-of-5-star rating. To be fair, though, many of the reviews we read related to customers’ in-store experiences and not to shopping online.

Raymour & Flanigan

Raymour & Flanigan offers furniture in a wide range of styles, from traditional to contemporary. We were impressed with the company’s detailed product descriptions. For each item in Raymour & Flanigan’s catalog, you can read the specifics on types of wood and fasteners used in construction, fabric composition, cushioning material and more. Having so much detail about product features can help customers determine whether an item is a good fit for their home and whether it’s fairly priced for its quality,

Overall, Raymour & Flanigan’s collection is reasonably priced. You can purchase a leather sofa from the company for under $1,000, a rocking recliner for under $500 and a 5-piece dining set for around $400. So if you’re shopping on a budget, Raymour & Flanigan is a great place to start. The company’s website also features a sale section that they call the outlet store, where you can buy a sectional sofa for $549.

Need help paying for your furniture? Raymour & Flanigan offers financing options for up to 60 months. If you make payments on time and fulfill your obligation within the agreed-upon loan term, you buy furniture  interest-free (terms and conditions may apply.) And if you have poor credit or no credit history, you can take advantage of the company’s lease-to-own program with no credit check required.

Walmart

You can buy furniture for every room in your house from Walmart online. The company also offers a wide selection of patio furniture, with over 1,000 items available. Walmart even offers a funky collection of gaming desks and chairs — Barbie pink or black with red racing stripes, anyone? Desks are available for under $100 and you can find gaming chairs that swivel, rock or have built-in speakers.

There are at least a dozen sofas for online sale at Walmart.com that cost under $300. At that price, you can fill your online shopping cart with a matching side chair or ottoman without breaking the bank. If you’re furnishing your first apartment on a student’s budget, Walmart is a great place to begin searching. Accent pieces like rugs and side tables are similarly inexpensive.

But what level of quality are you getting when you shop for furniture at Walmart? Let’s just say you get what you pay for. Much of Walmart’s furniture is made from engineered or composite wood. That’s especially true of such items as coffee tables and bookshelves. Solid wood furniture is rare at Walmart. The company’s warranty policy is limited to the manufacturer’s warranty which is rarely over a year and may be as short as 90 days. So don’t expect the furniture you buy at Walmart to last a long time. Chances are, you’ll want to upgrade to another brand as your budget allows.

Overstock.com

Overstock.com was launched in 1999 and remains one of the most popular discount retailers. The company ranked second for projected growth in 2021, according to the National Retail Federation. The company’s website is easy to navigate and offers a wide range of on-trend furniture for those looking for the latest styles. Classic pieces are also featured in the company’s catalog. Overstock.com is also a great place to shop for home accents, from lamps and pillows to mirrors and handcrafted rugs.

We noted that Overstock has curated a collection of small space furniture, which includes sofas, accent chairs, shelving units and more. You can also purchase cabinets and vanities for your kitchen and bath on the site — an unusual feature among the sites we review. The company’s selection of outdoor furniture is also quite impressive.

Overall, Overstock offers an unparalleled selection of high-quality furniture. Prices are typically lower than standard retail because the company fills its store with items purchased from leftover stock from other retailers — hence the company’s name. The company also offers a paid membership to Club O for $18.95 per year. Customers can earn 5% cash back on all purchases when they sign up.

Overstock.com employs six brand ambassadors who reach out to customers via multiple media and provide home furnishing and decor tips. You can “meet” these experts on YouTube and broadcast programs such as HGTV, Food Network and the ABC network.

Home Depot

Are you surprised to learn that Home Depot isn’t just a place to shop for lumber and paint? We were. You wouldn’t know it by wandering the aisles of your local store. But through the miracle of online shopping, Home Depot is, indeed, a hub for furniture for your living room, dining room, entryway, home office and more.

You can search easily for a wide range of furniture styles at HomeDepot.com, from farmhouse to mid-century modern to contemporary. It’s simple to narrow your search to particular colors and upholstery materials, as well. You can also shop by savings, selecting only those items that are on sale for 10%, 20%, 30% or 40% off. That’s a handy feature if you’re looking for the best furniture values.

Home Depot’s selection is fairly broad and includes some well-known mattress brands. The company features 8 of its brands in the general furniture category but offers a wide range of other brands, too.

The company’s product descriptions are fairly detailed and include information on fabric content and the type of wood used in construction. But for each item you’re considering purchasing, Home Depot also publishes an FAQ section. That makes it easy to find or request more information online.

Home Depot offers free standard shipping on furniture, but you can also opt for the convenience of in-store pick up at a Home Depot store near you. That’s an attractive feature because, if by chance you’re not pleased with the furniture you order once you see it, you can save the time and hassle of returning it.

AllModern

If clean lines and uncommon contemporary shapes appeal to you, AllModern, a division owned by home furnishings giant Wayfair, might be a great starting point for your online furniture odyssey.

Taking a look at the company’s sofa selection, we discovered burnt orange leather, forest green chenille, royal blue velvet and other eye-popping colors in a range of shapes and styles. You’ll find dining ensembles that take their cue from the mid-century, industrial-looking sets with hairpin legs, and sets made from sleek, modern plastics.

For upholstered items, AllModern offers customers the opportunity to order free samples. Computer screens are finicky and it’s often difficult to get a true representation of fabric color. AllModern’s free sample program allows you to bring a little piece of the furniture you’re considering home, without taking the big step of ordering it. It’s a great way to be sure your recliner will complement your area rug or wall color or other furniture in your room.

You’ll also find pillows, chandeliers and an impressive collection of decor for your walls and floors at AllModern.com. Items in every department reflect the company’s specialization in modern design. And AllModern lets you find what you’re looking for with more than 20 search filters to zero in on the perfect choice for your home. Not sure exactly what you’re looking for? AllModern also offers free design consults for customers via video, phone or email.

Birch Lane

Birch Lane is another online property of Wayfair.com. The site is known for providing inspiration and access to traditional design. If you’re looking for a tufted velvet roll-arm loveseat, a Southern farmstyle sideboard or a French Provincial coffee table, you’ve come to the right place.

Birch Lane offers products at a wide range of price points, but it’s generally not a place to find serious bargains. Quality is certainly connected to cost and the company offers many products that are crafted from solid wood and high-quality materials. Most are made in the USA. You will find the occasional piece made from particle board, but construction materials are clearly stated in the website’s product “quick view” mode.

In addition to furniture for every room in your house, Birch Lane also expresses its signature traditional style through a catalog that’s brimming with home accessories, including tabletop sculptures, vases, mirrors, plant stands and more. Like furniture, home decor items are searchable by style and color.

Birch Lane offers free design consults, a great feature for beginners or even experts looking for specific direction on how to achieve a certain look in your home by purchasing from the Birch Lane catalog.

Buying Furniture Online FAQs

Is it better to buy used furniture?

chevron-down
chevron-up

There are certainly plenty of good reasons to buy used furniture. One consumer's trash is another's treasure and you can save a lot of money by shopping used. Buying used furniture can also broaden your choices, especially when you shop at antique stores or estate sales.

But it takes a lot of time to scour the used furniture shops and you're not going to find a vast number of items all in one place. Used furniture items don't come with a warranty. And chances are, you'll have to haul that sectional home by yourself. So there's a place for second-hand  and a place for new in your furniture buying strategy.

Is there any risk in buying furniture online?

chevron-down
chevron-up

The main risk of buying furniture online is that you're buying it sight unseen. Pictures can only say so much. They can't tell you how comfortable a mattress is or whether a rug will compliment your dining room table. You can't duplicate the experience of showroom shopping when you shop at an online store. But many shoppers feel the risks are outweighed by such advantages as breadth of furniture selection and the lower prices online stores can offer due to their lower overhead costs.

Why are shipping costs so expensive when buying furniture online?

chevron-down
chevron-up

Actually, most online furniture companies offer free shipping. Shipping costs are baked into the price of the item you're buying. However, should you choose to return an item, you'll likely be responsible for shipping costs, which can be considerable.

What are the best ways to transport furniture?

chevron-down
chevron-up

That depends on what you're transporting and to where. If you're picking up a knock-down-assemble-it-yourself bookcase or a couple of end tables from Cost Plus World Market, you can probably transport them in their  original packaging in your own vehicle, provided it's large enough.

But if you're buying a brand new upholstered couch or a similarly unwieldy piece of furniture from Joss & Main, Pottery Barn, or its cousin West Elm, it's better to leave delivery to the pros. Most online furniture stores don't charge delivery fees, so your wallet won't feel a pinch. Even cheap furniture usually comes with free shipping.

How We Chose the Best Places to Buy Furniture Online

When evaluating the contenders for our Best Of title, we considered a wide range of factors. We looked for stores that represented both the high-end and low-end of the price spectrum. We gave points to companies that offered a range of styles, from traditional to modern furniture, while also giving a nod to stores that specialize in a particular look. We looked at each company’s shipping and return policies and checked to see what kind of warranties they offered to protect consumers.
