Special work of historical fiction: ‘1904: Murder in the West Bottoms’

“1904: Murder in the West Bottoms” is a fictional crime noir set in a very real, very gritty 1904 Kansas City. Written by longtime Star editor Darryl Levings and illustrated by Héctor Casanova, the murder mystery centers around Lafayette Alonzo Tillman, one of Kansas City’s first black police officers. Tillman is called by Jim Pendergast to investigate a murder and it leads Tillman to encounters with some of the city’s most colorful characters.

The four-part series was published weekly starting Nov. 30 in the Star Magazine. Find it all here.
