U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, a Democrat from California, has received the American Baptist Churches USA’s highest recognition, presented recently at the church’s Biennial Mission Summit in Overland Park.

The Rev. Edwin T. Dahlberg Peace and Justice Award was presented to Lee for her efforts in those areas.

The church group praised Lee for “having the courage of her convictions, tirelessly stepping up to prevent gun violence, protect jobs, improve the economy, reform the criminal justice system and provide affordable, quality health care for all.” The award was presented June 27.

Previous recipients include President Jimmy Carter, Marian Wright Edelman, U.S. Rep. John Lewis and inaugural recipient Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1964. Lee’s district includes Oakland, Calif., and areas around it.
