Thieves steal boxes for kitty donations

Overland Park police are looking for thieves who stole donation boxes from a cat adoption operation at Metcalf South Shopping Center.

Police Chief John Douglass reported on his blog that the apparent gang consisted of three juvenile girls who appeared to be 11 or 12 years old and a woman.

The juveniles entered Purrfect Pets just before 3 p.m. and looked at some of the kittens up for adoption. Then the woman entered the store and spoke briefly with the juveniles before all four ran out. They took with them two boxes containing donations to help the nonprofit agency buy food, litter, toys and veterinary care for the cats.

“Fleabags Steal Feline Funds,” Douglass titled his blog post.

It is not clear how much money was in the donation boxes.

A witness said a temporary license tag on the thieves’ vehicle, described as a blue or silver Dodge Caravan, contained the numbers 7173.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 913-895-6300 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
