Kansas City Canning Co. wins national Good Food Award with its shrub

Kansas City Canning Co.’s Apple Caraway Shrub is now a bona fide Good Food Award product.

The 2016 Good Food Award winners were announced Jan. 15 in San Francisco. Kansas City Canning Co. had two products as finalists: the shrub in the spirits category and its 7-pepper jelly in the preserves category.

In the end, it happily walked away with one winner.

“Counting lots of lucky stars today!” the company posted on its Instagram account. “We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share what we do with others.”

Kansas City Canning Co. was founded by husband-and-wife team Tim and Laura Tuohy. It produces shrubs (sweetened vinegar-based syrups) based on what’s in season. A 16-ounce bottle costs $16.

The Good Food Awards contest recognizes exceptional sustainable and artisan foods produced in America in several categories, including beer, chocolate, cheese and confections.

According to its website, the awards “celebrate the kind of food we all want to eat: tasty, authentic and responsibly produced.” The 2016 winners were chosen from 1,927 entrants.
