Oklahoma Joe’s is famous for its list-topping ribs and legendary Z-Man sandwich, which stacks slow-smoked brisket on top of a butter-toasted kaiser roll with smoked provolone, two onion rings and barbecue sauce.
But did you know that Oklahoma Joe’s, which has locations in KCK, Olathe and Leawood, also serves a vegetarian version of the Z-Man? The portobello Z-Man sandwich ($6.99) swaps brisket with thick slices of portobello mushrooms smoked over smoldering Missouri white oak.
The meat-free barbecue sandwich started as a Meatless Monday special but is now available every day. I tried one while working on Ink’s barbecue-themed summer dining guide. The smoky flavor and meaty texture of the mushrooms makes them ultra-satisfying — even if you’re a carnivore.
Here’s another Z-Man tip: You can “Z-Man-ize” any meat on the menu. The smoked chicken Z-Man sandwich is the most popular alternative to brisket, but you can also choose pulled pork, turkey, ham or sausage.
