A year ago during #BlueOctober, many Kansas City-area restaurants and bars toasted the Royals’ historic postseason run with specials on everything from burgers to blue beer.
The strangest Royals-themed treat I found was served up by Mass Street Soda, which invented a Billy Butler Bacon Barbecue float with chocolate-covered maple smoked bacon soda, vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of Billy’s Hit It a Ton barbecue sauce. The local pop shop also offered discounts on South American sodas in honor of Salvador Perez.
Recently I started working on this year’s roundup of Blue October specials. The most out-there menu item I’ve found so far is at Westport Cafe & Bar, which is swinging for the fences with the biggest Bloody Mary I’ve ever seen.
The #BloodyMaryTizer is a 25-ounce cocktail garnished with seven — yep, seven — skewers of appetizers, including chicken and waffles, mini tacos, corn dogs, pizza rolls and lobster-flavored crackers. The $15 drink serves two to four people and will be available during Royals playoff games starting on Oct. 8.
The #BloodyMaryTizer, spiked with Kansas City’s own J. Rieger & Co. vodka, is the signature item on Westport Cafe & Bar’s new game-day menu, which also features bratwurst from Broadway Butcher Shop, Korean nachos and a beer cocktail called Sluggerrr-ade. The bar and restaurant at 419 Westport Road is also adding two TVs for baseball fans.
